Postmortem Guideline Queries

Post by Daedalus » Sep 29th, 2010, 20:58

Greetings, Posty.

We've a new code of laws in effect that will be displayed to newly registering users (as part of the preparation phase for the New Postmortem). Be sure to give the thread a browse and make sure you understand the rules therein, as they're applicable to the entire board as of this point. If you've any questions on any particular point pertaining to the new rules, please don't hesitate to ask them here.

The guidelines can be found here.

Thanks, and take care.

Blood + Focus = Love · Faith is the key · Heretics and traitors cannot stand before us · Some games are self-perpetuating - Blood requires conscientious communal effort to survive · We are the last line · Ask not for whom the main menu animates · Blood's promotion and survival - all other gaming considerations are secondary · More than just a game · Need a hint? · Make a stand

Good guidelines. A few observations below.

1. Extra accounts. Sockpuppets (multiple accounts controlled by the same user) have gotten out of hand on some forums. I've seen forums have an "instant ban" policy for ALL accounts found to be under one user's control, which essentially stops that person from using the forum at all. Not sure if that's much of a problem for Posty, given that numbers are low enough as it is, but it's something to consider.

2. May want to clarify unsuitable materials beyond merely "penile imagery". Without getting into a debate about what constitutes porn vs. art, you might simply want to disallow overtly sexual images, depictions of genitalia, or other categories. As they stand, the rules currently forbid Michelangelo's David (which features a penis) but not hardcore lesbian porn (which doesn't).

3. For insulation from legal liability, you may want to have some sort of statement to the effect that Posty does not condone (or does not tolerate, if you feel strongly enough about it) any piracy. Given that Blood is now available for less than ten bucks on GOG.com, inaccessibility is no longer a compelling argument to support piracy of this game. Plus, in the offchance that somebody litigious decides to come along and slap a lawsuit on piraters, Posty ought to be safe from danger.

4. In addition to the language prescribing polite conduct towards women, some forums have language stating that posting a given member's personal information without their consent will lead to punitive action. I'm given to understand that this was a development intended to provide some support for female users, who are statistically most likely to fall victim to forum/real-life harassment.

These are the suggestions I can think of right now. Full speed ahead for Posty!

This phenomena occurs on forums where people who already have an account want additional anonymity, and we can't have a problem with that as the rules postulate complete freedom of speech and the possibility of a ban for a direct offense which can occur in any post. In addition to that, we can always identify when this occurs so there can't be any harm.

The "penile imagery" bit was merely a joke. Rule #5 precisely defines what is acceptable and what isn't.

Covered by rule #2 under section D.

I don't know about that. I was always under the impression that the Internet users should generally know how to take care of their privacy before they venture into these waters. If someone has someone else's personal information and wants to share it on the Internet, what would be the merit of doing so on Posty, and what would be the merit of disallowing it specifically on Posty? Especially since no preemptive measure can be taken for this in the first place. Just seems like a bit of a stretch on many levels.

Thanks! But we're looking to upgrade to an electric locomotive. We hear those are much faster!

As is I have personally have very little experience with people like this and I could see how it's a valid concern, willingly abusing the system while creating chaos and confusion is not something we will condone, but I was thinking more about situations where old user might've lost their password or forgotten the existence of their account (this has happened before) so we don't want to be overly pushing about it -- there's even a thread about it that hopefully most people will make use of. If someone wants one more accounts here I would see it as them wanting to stay here -- we present our rules to them and allow them to stay if they keep their cool.

Like Dimebog said, this last bit in this rule is clearly a pun, while we wanted to have a more well written rule set than our last one, we still couldn't resist throwing a few jokes in. One may freely discuss art like David or mostly anything even more graphic if they want. I think most people can judge with good taste. I actually find it weird that we haven't had such threads (centering around beautiful females, for example) before, so the rule is there both to remind people that we indeed are an adult forum but we still have our limits, such is the power of Blood.
PriestOfTheBeast wrote:3. For insulation from legal liability, you may want to have some sort of statement to the effect that Posty does not condone (or does not tolerate, if you feel strongly enough about it) any piracy.
This is covered by Rule 2 §. We have never condoned piracy and this has even lead a lot of people to blame us for being manipulative and a strict environment, but that only goes to show us where they stand.
PriestOfTheBeast wrote:4. In addition to the language prescribing polite conduct towards women, some forums have language stating that posting a given member's personal information without their consent will lead to punitive action.
This is covered by Rule 3 §. It counts as a personal attack on a user to post private information about them when he or she does not want for that information to become public.

Thanks for the questions and I hope these posts clarify the rules a bit. If you or anyone else has anything to comment about or any questions, please let us know!
