Perhaps use a different symbol for standup and prone cultists and use colour-coding to identify different cultist types. The difficult part from the point of design is putting a pro and a con to different stances. For example, better avoidance but slower speed (which I don't think is viable for this type of a game unless you make monsters skip every second turn).

Update time! :D

Download here

New stuff done:
New weapons - Tesla Canon, Tommy Gun
New enemies - Fanatic, Zealot
Player visual memory - Things outside your field of view are seen as your character remembers them.
Merged Firearm-slot and Melee-slot - Instead of two separate slots, you have "Wielding". Firearms can also be used in melee to buttstroke enemies.
Interface shows Wielding-info - Name of wielded weapon. Weapon damage and total attack skill (weapon base + character skill). For firearms you see total firearm-skill, this is not the skill used for melee attacks. You also see ammo count.
And probably more that i forgot.

Keys:
Move with numpad (2,4,6,8 = down, left, right, up. 1, 3, 7, 9 = diagonal. 5 = wait in place). You can also move with the digits if you don't have a numpad (laptop).

The arrow keys also works for movement.

< - climb stairs
> - descend stairs
t - throw item
f - aim / fire ranged weapon
i - inventory
g - get, pick up (use it to eat life essences and life seeds from the ground)
e - ready (light fuse) dynamite in your dynamite-slot. Press e again to aim, and e (or t) a final time to throw.
r - reload
Shift + q = quit

Walk into monsters to attack with equiped weapon.

How do am I supposed to get out of the grave ? The char doesn't move :(.

I pressed "f" while in there, and my @ became a green X, but now it seems the game is stuck, I can't even quit...

I wonder if there is some hardware or OS incompatibility going on.

The @-symbol didn't move when you pressed numpad or arrow keys?
Try toggling num-lock.
Le Babe wrote:I pressed "f" while in there, and my @ became a green X, but now it seems the game is stuck
Yes, you gave the command to aim. The X-symbol is where you aim. Since there is no enemies around the game placed the X right where you stand. You should be able to move it around just like you walk. Press f again to fire, or esc to cancel.
Le Babe wrote:I can't even quit...
As I said, you quit with shift+q.

On second thought, you probably knew the command for quitting. But it's not possible to quit while aiming.

I knew the command yes but I had to you the control pannel to close the game. I tried to toggle the num pad key and press 2 8 4 6 but nothing happenned.

Also, I use Win7 64bits and when I tried to open the game the first time it crashed, then it worked on the second try.

I've tried the game on three machines now and all of them ran it fine. Though non of them where a 64bit machine. I'll test it on one soon.

Update:

Smarter AI
* Some monsters will search for you if they saw you.
* Some will listen for sounds.
* Some will communicate about where to search.

Corpses/Gore (depending on force of attack)

Zombie-corpses can rise again.

Incinerator explosion also sets creatures on fire.

Blindness affects messages - "It bites you!", "You hear gunfire." et c

Blindness affects skill rolls.

Added some nice things to the forest-level
* Crypt that you climb out of.
* Graveyard.
* You reach the dungeon/underworld through the cellar of a ruined church.

Predefined rooms that appear randomly.

Fixed a graphical glitch with Tommy Gun and Tesla Cannon.

Various balancing/behaviour fixing.

Fixed some problems with keyboard input and the game directory thanks to Le Babe.

Update. And a playable version this time

Download here

What is new:
Big rearrangement of the interface.

In-game command list.

Monsters sometimes drop stuff when they die.

One item per tile. Items dropped on other items "roll" to the nearest free cell. This creates a nice "explosion"-effect when monsters die.

Message when you stand on an item.

Command for unloading ammo from a gun on the ground ('u').

Pressing the fire command when no ammo loaded attempts a reload instead.
(Especially handy with Shotguns.)

The interface always shows info for the wielded weapon both as a firearm and as a melee weapon.

Staircases cannot be hidden by corpses.

Hello again-
It's been a long time. That is because I've been running Linux lately, and I had to figure out how to compile a Windows version. I think I've succeeded in that now (at least it runs in Wine).

So, here's a new version, and it's a big update!

Download here

What is new:
There are incantation scrolls with mysterious titles that you can read. Their effect and true identity are unknown until you try them (and only if their effect is visible and obvious to the player character). Once you learn the true identity of a scroll, all scrolls of that type are always known. There are a decent number of types in the game already.

Items are found in the dungeon (not only dropped from killed monsters).

New skill: Dodge & Evade.

New items: More melee weapons. Healing items.

Dynamite explodes in your hands if you hold it too long.

Corpses blow up from explosions (can be used to prevent zombies from rising).

New enemy: Wolf.

Firearms on the ground have white symbol if they have ammo loaded, otherwise gray.

Projectile symbol depends on direction fired (used to be '/' for all directions).

Identical log messages show number of repeats, instead of repeating the message itself.
Before: You are hit. You are hit. You are hit.
Now: "You are hit.(x3)"

The log prompts for "[MORE]" if next message doesn't fit.

Added several log messages related to throwing, dynamite fuse, death screams from explosions and other things.
"You light a dynamite stick. You throw a lit dynamite stick. (E)You hear an explosion. (E)You hear agonized screaming(x4)"

Picking up items, lighting dynamite fuse and throwing now costs turns.

New inventory interface. It takes fewer key-presses to use now.

The new title of the game is "Dungeons of Madness", as a reference to H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness". I'm not sure if I'll stick with that, but i like it far more than the titles I've used before.

Nice to see you're still working on that. I'll give it a go when I have some more free time.
