All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Context: I was in mathematics class with a very devout Christian teacher.
Me: Goddammit. This problem is too damn hard. There must be a god out there and he hates me.

Teacher: You're wrong, PriestoftheBeast. There's a God out there and He loves you.

My Best Friend: [sotto voce] Christ - there's another one born every minute!
(My friend got a horrible punishment for that.)

Another similar incident with the same teacher, same friend.
Teacher: I can't see why anybody would be an atheist. If you believe in something, you at least have a soul.
My Best Friend: ...whereas atheists have a brain. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me...
(My friend got punished for that one too.)

Here's an Oscar Wilde quote thats sort of appropriate.

If I were in your friend's bold position, not only would the authoritarian break out the ban hammer, but I anticipate being hurled 10ft away from the building.

What type of punishments did he endure might I ask? :)

Whosoever controls the volume of money in any country is absolute master of all industry and commerce.... And when you realise that the entire system is very easily controlled, one way or another, by a few powerful men at the top, you will not have to be told how periods of inflation and depression originate.'

In this sad world of ours, sorrow comes to all; and, to the young, it comes with bitterest agony, because it takes them unawares. The older have learned to ever expect it.

And this ain’t no place for the weary kind
And this ain’t no place to lose your mind
And this ain’t no place to fall behind
Pick up your crazy heart and give it one more try

- Chorus for "the weary kind", theme from movie Crazy Heart.

On the Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy Show, Mandy speaks a similar quote, but it's in the form of:

"It is not enough to succeed... Others must fail."

I love it, just because.
