Did you know that Gabriele Falloppio invented the Fallopian Tube in 1561 as part of a failed attempt to patent the bicycle? Leonardo da Vinci had already designed it in 1515 but never took the formal steps of patenting his art.

In Taiwan (Republic of China) the penalties for injuring a pedestrian while driving a motor vehicle are greater than the penalties for outright killing a pedestrian while driving a motor vehicle. This led to a period of several years when drivers, upon learning they had injured a pedestrian, would then reverse gears and immediately run them over a second time to kill them.

The penalties at the time were: a jail term of several years for manslaughter (if the pedestrian died) vs. continual payments for their medical care for the rest of their lives (if the pedestrian survived).

The world-famous story about the Dutch boy saving his community from flooding by plugging the break in the levee with his finger actually comes from an American collection of children's tales: Hans Brinker, published in 1865. It is also one of the earliest modern portrayals of bi-curious experimentation, featuring as it does a young boy putting his finger in a dike.

The U.S. government has operated a news service, Voice of America, since WWII - which has provided neutral fact-based reporting akin to AP or Reuters wire services or the nonpartisan BBC service, initially to counter Soviet propaganda efforts and lately as an adjunct to its Department of State outreach mission.

Because of constitutional restrictions on the government's role in domestic news broadcast (fueled by fear of propaganda), VOA is legislatively barred from broadcasting within the U.S. to American citizens - who must instead make do with the highly partisan, profits-driven corporate news outlets of mainstream broadcast media such as NBC (owned by General Electric), CBS (owned by Viacom), Fox News (owned by News Corp. International), and ABC (owned by Disney).

This bar against VOA broadcasting domestically is set to expire in July 2013.

Colors representing pornographic content vary by culture and legal history. In China, "yellow" movies are pornographic, whereas in English speaking countries they are "blue" movies" and in Spanish they are "green" movies.

Hehehehehehe!

I'm not completely sure how the thread title's appropriate. These seem more like interesting factual snippets.

Shortly before a radio broadcast sound check, US President Ronald Reagan announced that Congress had declared Russia to be illegal and the American armed forces would commence bombing in five minutes. The comment was recorded over a live connection, causing consternation among its recipients.

Flushed with success at this consummate troll, Reagan then proceeded to wet his pants, wipe it on the windows, and then go hooting and gibbering through the hallowed halls of Congress with his hands in the air like a lunatic.

Contemporary Soviet reactions were generally described as "nonplussed".
