It burns! it burns!

Post by Status Cruo » Mar 7th, 2013, 17:29

Greetings fellow Bloodites.

You know those times when nothing's going your way and it just keeps getting worse and worse by the minute? The room I had recently built to store my retro-microcomputer collection, burned to a crisp during my sleep.

When my wife woke up to the smell of burning plastic, it was too late already. Among everything I lost were every Amiga and TRS-80 model ever released, several PC's from the 90's, a beautiful WANG 2200VP (exactly the one seen in the Jefferson Institute!) 8 crt monitors (2 still factory new) my powerful p4 retro rig that I used for almost everything, an nonoperative HAM radio from 1978, almost $180.000 worth of quality vintage synthesizers, God knows how many more on software/games including Blood, a sealed OUWB set with everything intact, an extra, pristine-condition OUWB set I bought just to rip the cd's, a web archive dating back to 1992, tons of rare, impossible-to-find software, a CD backup containing all my Internet passwords stored in encrypted Opera wands...you name it, it's gone.

Only a week ago did I start coming to my senses (maybe that's an overstatement, but let's say I was still in shock, mourning the loss) suddenly realizing how lucky I was that my family wasn't injured in any way. We managed to put out most of the fire before the firemen arrived, but there was very little they could do to save any of my precious possessions.

Hell, I'd have happily taken at least 25% of evenly distributed 3rd degree burns on my torso over this shit, but a choice the almighty Tchernobog didn't bless me with.

Now I go back to check on the source port thing...and it doesn't exactly elevate the morale that we're getting 4 more years of socialist baboons desecrating the White House.

Still, as long as I can play Blood, even if I have to do so on this shitty 10yo laptop, I'm a happy man.

Blood heals all wounds, in a sense 8)

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your artifact treasury, I would have fallen into an abyssal shock myself. Now this antiquarian hardware and software will exist only in your memories unfortunately, triggering nostalgic storms every so often. I shudder at thinking about how I would feel in your position. At least you and your family are unscathed, as you said.

It certainly is a hectic and unpredictable time we are in... natural disasters, simians squawking in the white house, noble figureheads falling, etc.

Fuck. That is sad news indeed. :(
But like you said, could have been much worse. Got to be grateful for it at least that way.

Still bummer though.
LOL HI!

Ach, sorry to hear about your loss, Status Cruo. I definitely understand that feeling of "I wish I'd been injured rather than these possessions". At least the human body can heal... but objects are gone for good.

Personally, I found your story rather inspiring. You lost many treasures - some of them irreplaceable - yet you still take solace in being able to play Blood as it stands and take great joy in it.

Thank God your family had collected fire armour.

Blood + Focus = Love · Faith is the key · Heretics and traitors cannot stand before us · Some games are self-perpetuating - Blood requires conscientious communal effort to survive · We are the last line · Ask not for whom the main menu animates · Blood's promotion and survival - all other gaming considerations are secondary · More than just a game · Need a hint? · Make a stand

All I can hope for is that nothing of the sort ever happens to any of you; when Cerberus pays a visit, it's over. And for the love of God, make numerous backups of everything that can be backed up.

@Daedalus: Oh the solace, Some people find it in the prayers, others in drugs and alcohol, but this guy has his Blood, that little corner of sanity no one can take away from me.

Ironically enough, I myself am a card-carrying pyromaniac
