I used to like Skype. Now I'm liking it less and less, as it becomes another "integrated platform" for Microsoft.

They removed the ability to access your chat logs, so now you have to go into the system files and manually extract them.

They also keep up the childish shell-game of shutting down the program - hitting Alt-F4 or clicking the "close window" button in the upper right causes it to merely minimize (because our product is SO GOOD that nobody would ever want to close it, and this includes you because we know better than you do what programs SHOULD be running on your computer!!). I have to right click on the Skype button on the taskbar and specifically order it to Quit Skype.

Google's Gmail phone service is looking much more attractive. It has roughly the same price for international calls (a few cents per minute to China) and it doesn't dick around with the interface in the way that Skype does. Calls within my own country are free - for now. The only drawback is you can't make computer-to-computer calls with it - you have to enter a physical phone number. (Google's premium service does apparently allow you to assign a phone number to your computer, so that takes care of that.)

That whole 'shell' deal you described with program persistence applies to MSN Messenger as well. The thing is practically impossible to shut down without taking far more steps than should be necessary. Add to that the endless advertisements, horrendous memory usage and unnecessary layout changes and you get a horrible sack of shit.

It's remarkable how seemingly challenging it is to make a streamlined, popular, lightweight chat application. You'd swear we were in the 80's.

I would not suspect anything paranormal if I experienced this with a camera.

Point being, this is an odd coincidence for an already suspected haunted house...

Only bad thing with irc is that it's ghay and open for everyone. I think big D was referring to something like msn with person vs person.

IRC supports private one-to-one conversations.

I can't remember where, possibly on MSN itself, but yes they may be shutting down MSN in favour of Skype. Wouldn't surprise me since they're more or less the same thing in different outfits.

I'm on ooVoo if anyone wants an alternative to Skype. Hell, it does multi-webcam chatting for free.

I use Google+ as an alternative to Facebook and Skype.

I'm in the same boat too. Google+ may not have the best user base but it does have the best privacy settings.

Consider this:

When Google scrapes your information to target ads at you, the only other party who accesses your information is Google itself. The only person who sees the targeted ads is you, the browsing party. Google's policy essentially boils down to "use our services, we tailor ads to your data".

Compare this with Facebook and other social media, where the automatic assumption is that you're online to share. Their policy essentially boils down to "you're here to share your data, and our general assumption is you're okay with sharing everything with everybody...".
