Belated Greetings from your Newest Moderator

Post by Hendricks266 » Aug 17th, 2012, 02:42

Hail Bloodites!

It is with great honor that I have been bestowed the duty of a moderator here at Posty. This was spurred by Jace's appearance here, the need for additional moderation, and the thoughts of someone who works on a BUILD engine source port.

Any questioning of me has merit. In relation to Blood, I have little tangible to show you in public. I have been an idler in The Postmortem's IRC channel for some time, and that has been my extent of my involvement in The Postmortem per se (besides Hendricks' Foolproof Method of Rat/Hand/Spider Execution). My hobbying has been focused majorly on Blood's brethren, Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior. I present these links as evidence of what I have done in this regard.

My love for Blood is shared equally as with Duke and SW though I have not had the opportunity to show it. The fourth link above contains sections named "Duke 3D Beta" and "SW Beta"; a third section named "Blood Prototypes" was to follow but I realized that my manual method of parsing the data would be insufficient in the face of not just a near-final beta as with Duke and SW, but a beta and also an alpha, not to mention the pre-1.0 versions released for testing.

Another private project I embarked on revolved around tracing a potential, albeit doubtful, lead on the Blood source code. On JonoF's forums, a user named "stevbld" posted the following:
what does one do if they downloaded the full blood source twice when it was available for the 4 weeks or so from their site? Is it legal to release even when one has an email from one of the blood programmers wishing me luck in trying to code the blood exe to work on other 3d cards besides 3dfx? He encouraged me to download the source code and have a go. I responded in email that i did twice.
I questioned him thus:
Do you actually have the Blood source code?
Yes I do. I actually downloaded it twice in the month it was available. I even got 3 emails from one of the programmers of blood when blood 2 was released as I asked him if there was going to be a release of a new blood exe file where it would run on other 3d cards except 3dfx 1? His reply to me was - No there is no plans for a 3d fix for blood 1 but am welcome to download the blood source code and have a try myself before it dissappears from the site. I responded by saying - already downloaded it twice thanks. He said good luck! I still have the saved emails. Am a bit cautious as there looks like there could be some sort of legalities from Atari in distribution of the source code.
Despite the outrageous claims in this text, I set out to find what I could about the website. At the time this exchange was to have taken place, the Blood website was still located at http://www.blood.com, not yet having moved to http://blood.lith.com. The WayBack Machine reveals the following:

http://wayback.archive.org/web/*/http://blood.com

Quite an amount of Blood's history lies behind this barricade. The WayBack Machine themselves did not respond to inquiries. I petitioned the squatter owner of the blood.com domain, Webmasters.com, to remove the block on the WayBack Machine. They had the following reply:
Hello,

We apologize, but it is our preference that all past records regarding our domain names remain private. This is the reason for the restrictions in the robots.txt file, and it is well within our rights as domain owners. Thank you for your understanding.

Best regards,

L. Bensonoff

Webmasters.com
Thus, this saga ends. I have had my browser open the link to the WayBack Machine I included above along with my links to Duke4.net, the wiki, etc., every day for at least 18 months, in the hopes that the block would fall. It has remained up consistently.

It is a fact that at the time of this writing I have provided no user created content for Blood or tools/applications/programs. Daedolon has entrusted me, I assume, based on our own interactions and assistance, with words, tools, and a small bit of finance, combined with his desire for help with moderation of the Jace influx. In reference to the prototype analysis above, I have had planned, though not executed, an "ultimate" art tool which combines the functions of DOS Editart with various flawed Windows tools released since then, and incorporating aspects from "arttool" by JonoF, the ReBUILD tools from the Transfusion project, and art tools by my friend Kraigose. My vision is to compare a set of art tiles from versions of a BUILD game and output clean HTML and images detailing all the differences in the art, down to the minutiae of the x/y offsets.

In the shorter term, I am working on writing a tool for the Cradle to Grave project which will convert Blood's art set directly to PNG images in the format usable for EDuke32's tilefromtexture command, without any extra editing for transparency and without losing the palette index.

I do not request your immediate acceptance, however I request that I prove my worth from here forward.

blood.com has been de-blocked from the WayBack Machine, so if anyone wants to scour its contents for the alleged four-week leak, now is the time.

http://wayback.archive.org/web/*/http://blood.com

Note that some days (the ones with bigger circles) have multiple captures which you can select from by hovering over the date.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've missed the old site.

According to Wayback, by 2005.02.05 the URL had become a portal for a BDSM site. I guess "blood" probably makes a certain amount of sense in that context.

I found that out the hard way.

Get it? Hard?
