Even death may die is an extract from the novel Call of Cthulhu (1928) by Howard Phillips Lovecraft. The full line goes: “That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die”.

Mission 1 : Shipwrecked

The map is based on the 1818 novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, which prominently features a ship that becomes trapped in ice.

Mission 3 : Rest for the Wicked

No rest for the wicked is a phrase originating from the Bible, namely the Book of Isaiah, 48:22 and 57:21.

The Overlooked Hotel is a play on The Overlook Hotel which appears and is the main set in the movie The Shining (1980).

Choking Hands : The first appearance of the Choking Hand enemies, which are an obvious reference to the movie Evil Dead II (1987).

Jack Torrance : You can find the body of Jack Torrance in the hedgemaze, frozen to death, as seen in the end of the Stanley Kubrick's movie The Shining (1980). Caleb also says “Here's Johnny!” when discovering the body. This also is a reference to the same movie.
